Make Your Own Green Laundry Detergent (Borax Free)

We've always been concerned with the number of chemicals put into store bought laundry soap so we started to make our own. The following DIY recipe is very simple and is made from products that have a very good rating on EWG's (Environmental Working Group) website. You should be able to find almost all of these ingredients at your local store except the Biokleen Oxygen Bleach which we purchased in bulk from Amazon. The primary reason we came up with our own recipe is because Borax has a terrible (F) rating on EWG. This recipe has an almost A+ rating on EWG, with the exception of the Dr. Bronner's bar soap because it's not rated; however, most of Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps get an A+!

Ingredients of Homemade Laundry Soap

Use 1/8 cup scoop per load.

Why Not Borax?

Borax received an F+ from the EWG website, mostly due to reproductive hazards from sodium borate. When we saw this we decided to search the internet for recipes and ended up creating our own.

How To Make

The recipe is pretty simple; just grate the soap and combine all ingredients. I usually end up creating small single batches (grating one bar of soap at a time) instead of creating one large batch.

If you have a good food processor with a grating attachment of the right size (small enough so that chunks dissolve easily in the wash), you can process multiple bars of soap quickly to make a large batch.

Cheaper Bar Soap?

I like the scent of Dr. Bronner's but it can be expensive if you cannot find it locally on sale. Another alternative that you might look into, and might be available locally, is Kirk's Original Coco Castile bar soap. They also make a Fragrance Free version that has a great EWG rating
